Product Review: PowerPere Collapsible Water Bottle

16 April 2015

I’m pretty sure that I’m chronically dehydrated.

No matter how hard I try, I just can’t seem to remember to drink enough water. A simple fix would be to have a bottle of it on hand at all times, but I hate carrying them around. They are clunky, heavy, and they take up a lot of room in my bag. Sure, I could purchase bottled water from my local grocery store, but how wasteful is that? Plus, that also means consuming BPA, which can cause harmful health effects. And so, an unfortunate dilemma arises: face the health risks of dehydration, or face the health risks of BPA. Both of these options seem less-than-awesome.

Then I heard about PowerPere’s new collapsible water bottle from my friend Adrian, and I was so excited that PowerPere kindly sent me one to give it a try. When my bottle finally arrived, I immediately ripped it from its packaging. It had all of the things I wanted:

  • It is made with BPA-free, high-grade silicone
  • It features a sport-style, flip-top lid for easy consumption
  • It’s silicone ring secures it in its folded state
  • It comes with a small carabiner to attach it to belt loops or bag straps
  • It can be used for both cold and hot beverages
  • It’s dishwasher safe for cleaning (because I’m lazy like that)

This past weekend, I took the bottle with me on a hike. At 17 ounces, I was confident it would hold enough to get me through the trek. I noticed right away that the silicone is thick enough to prevent leaks, but slender enough to roll up tightly to about a quarter of its size when you want to stow it away.  It’s very lightweight, even when it’s full.  The silicone does tend to pick up random particles and fuzz, but that didn’t really bother me.

Before we set out, I used the carabiner to attach it to the strap of my backpack for easy access. I wasn’t worried about it jostling around during the trip because the silicone is nice and flexible. I was afraid the bottle wouldn’t be able to stand up on its own because of how flimsy it feels in your hands, but when I set it down to tie my shoes, I was pleasantly surprised that it remained upright.

The only slight downside for me was that after the first two washes, the bottle left a strange aftertaste in my water. I mentioned this to the folks at PowerPere, and they commented that I was the only customer who had reported experiencing this. Sure enough, the Amazon reviewers concurred. So, I gave it one more good clean, and it worked like a charm! Crisis averted.

To be on the safe side, I highly recommend washing it thoroughly. Run it through the dishwasher two-to-three times before using it, and this little baby will leave you feeling happy and hydrated.

Honestly, this thing seems too good to be true, but thankfully for me, it's not!  The PowerPere collapsible water bottle is absolutely perfect for my needs, and at the time of publishing this review, it costs less than $20 on Amazon. I would recommend it to anyone in search of a packable water bottle! I can’t wait to bring it on other trips. I think it just might become my go-to water bottle for commuting around Chicago, too.
